About Ben

Ben’s passion for bicycles began at eight years old when he learned to ride on a friend’s bike. Before long, he received his own—and immediately started taking it apart. Unsatisfied with the braking performance, he completely disassembled and reassembled the brakes to make them work better. That curiosity and determination to understand how bicycles work would shape the rest of his life.

As his interests evolved, so did his mechanical skills. While riding BMX, Ben taught himself how to true wheels by carefully adjusting spoke tension and observing the effect on the rim. When mountain biking became his passion in high school, he learned to install and tune derailleurs, brake systems, and other components through countless hours of hands-on experience.
By college, Ben had discovered that one bicycle simply wasn’t enough. Every bike he owned introduced new components, new technologies, and new maintenance challenges, continually expanding his knowledge as both a rider and mechanic. After graduating from Penn State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, he made an unexpected decision: instead of pursuing engineering, he followed his passion and began a career in the bicycle industry.
Ben’s professional career started at Eddie’s Bicycles & Hockey Equipment, where he was the shop’s only employee. That unique opportunity gave him hands-on experience in every aspect of operating a successful bicycle shop—from performing repairs and helping customers to managing inventory and keeping daily operations running smoothly.

Looking to further his skills, Ben joined Freeze Thaw Cycles, where he continued to expand his technical expertise while working on a wide variety of bicycles and repair challenges. During his time there, he was introduced to mobile race support, providing mechanical assistance at events including the Transylvania Epic stage race. That experience showed him the value of bringing professional bicycle service directly to riders, wherever they needed it.
Ben later joined The Bicycle Shop as a mechanic. Within weeks, his technical ability, work ethic, and leadership earned him a promotion to Service Writer. He reorganized and improved the service department, helping increase repair quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. He also continued providing mobile mechanical support at major cycling events, including the GRIT race series and the Transylvania Epic.
